Top 10 Kid-Friendly Indoor Activities To Do In Ottawa During The Winter

Sweater weather is here! and the outdoors is still a great place to be with all the fall colours and warmer days. BUT since our weather in Ottawa is usually super cold during the winter, as beautiful as it sometimes can be, it keeps us cooped up at home and we can tend to get stir crazy. I have compiled a list of the top 10 kid-friendly indoor things to do in Ottawa during the winter so we can adventure out into the wild without worrying about the frigid Canadian cold. I’ve also got a bunch of honourable mentions that are great for date-night or out with friends sans-children.

How I Potty Trained My 6-Months-Old

Nope. Never thought I’d be thaaaat mom. You know, the one who makes her newborn take a sh*t over the toilet. Hell, I would’ve bet money against it! But lo and behold we found ourselves with a six-month-old who happily takes dumps on the toilet like an adult–in more ways than one!

Summer Reading: Chore or Privilege

For as long as I can remember, books were a chore because they often led to an evaluation of some sort. The problem with this is that I love to learn new things, and most of the time knowledge comes from a book. So, I have decided to try and incorporate reading back into my life, and take back the task as a privilege.

Mom Hack: Preventing Diaper Blowouts

In your past life, you probably would look forward to the treat of a blowout because it was often accompanied by a night out enjoying yourself and looking fine. Now that you’re a mom, that term probably scares the crap out of you (pun intended!). Have faith, I’ve got a great easy and cheap solution for you.

The Thrill Of The Thrift

If you’ve known me for long enough, you knoooow that I don’t hide the fact that I buy almost everything used (I do draw the line at underwear), and I happily share my finds with the world. Back in the day, thrifting was out of necessity because as a broke-ass student I refused to choose between a new outfit or groceries. This way I got to sport a new-to-me item AND afford the real cheese for my (homemade) mac&cheese dinner.

How I Got My Husband To Let Me Share All-The-Things On The Internet

If you know my husband, you would say that he is a relatively private person, and that his existence on social media is solely published by other people. So how is it that I am able to share so much about our life with the world..? I asked permission.

Baby Foods Adults Actually Want To Eat

Introducing new foods to baby can be a daunting task, or a fun challenge depending on how you choose to look at it. We really didn’t want to do the boring purée thing, especially since we wanted to give her homemade food, so the challenge we decided to embark on is to create baby foods adults actually want to eat.

Baby’s First Foods

With all of the ever-changing guidelines and recommendations and fads out there, it can be super daunting to try and figure out what is best for your baby. While I am no expert, I have spoken with a Registered Dietitian and the additional information I was given was astounding, and reassured me over so many fears that I had from reading all the things on the internet. So I figured I would share a few tidbits along with our journey through food with little miss.

Postpartum Comes In All Shapes And Sizes

The thing about postpartum that most don’t understand is that it isn’t always depression at all, and that there is a spectrum of each of the emotions involved.

One of the most common ones is anger. Not necessarily angry at your baby, but BIG anger at the smallest things–like when your husband throws out the rest of your coffee when you were busy in the next room feeding your baby, or when he is snoring obnoxiously next to you while you are awake at the crack of dawn for the third time to feed your little monster, or when your baby’s noises just annoy the f*ck out you in that very moment, or when the mailman doesn’t read the sign and rings the damn doorbell that one time your kid actually decided to nap. Patience wears thin, and not just because the sheer lack of sleep… Sometimes one good scream in the next room is all you need to regain your composure and deal with your screaming newborn for another hour before they decide to settle on a whim. Because you have tried everything several times to soothe them. Every. Damn. Thing. More than once.

Baby Is Here!

She’s here! She is beautiful and strong and growing so fast. If you want, you can read all about our birth story but for now, a big thank you to our photographer, Lisa Johnson, for these amazing keepsakes from our first family portrait session. They are the perfect pair with the gorgeous barnwood frame we got our hands on for our home, and I love walking by and smiling at it every day.

Christmas 2018 – Keeping Up With The Holiday Traditions

Holiday traditions are always a fun thing to hear what other families do differently than yours, to hear about similarities, and to get great inspiration from completely out-of-the box ideas. When it comes to Christmas, I have got a boatload of traditions that I want to keep going, but this year felt like the perfect year to get a little crazy and do all the hosting before baby arrives. And of course, we kept our little ornament tradition alive!

Stephanie & Alex’s Maternity Photos in Nepean Woods

For those of you who know me well, you are aware of my weird allergy to water and cold (yeah, good luck living in Canada right!?). So you can imagine the sheer determination it took to go out into the snowy woods to get our maternity portraits captured. Where there is a will (and photoshop), there is a way! Are You Focusing On The Right Things In Your Business?

With the recent mass power outage in Ottawa, there are a ton of stories being passed around, recounts of adventures, and despite all the negative things that have happened, there is still so much positivity in the air. I am so proud to be a part of a community that lives that way. And, of course, I’ve got my own story to tell–but it isn’t about ME, it’s about YOUR business.

I was lucky enough to be able to photograph all of my clients over the weekend with natural light, and that my studio was at an acceptable temperature throughout the day (thankfully no newborn sessions, just older babies and expecting mamas). I had all forms printed out beforehand, and batteries charged, so I was well prepared. See mom; my Murphy’s law mentality DOES come in handy! Had I not previously practiced with natural light instead of my strobes, I do not think the days would have gone so smoothly.

My husband on the other hand, was not so lucky with his work…

Getting Ready For Baby

When it comes to choosing to be parents, you’d think you’d have more time and focus when it comes to getting ready for baby to arrive. Nope. You let time pass by thinking you have so much left, and then it hits you that you’re over 30 weeks in, and have less than 3 months to go to get everything done!

We Built A Shed!

I will let the photos do most of the talking on this one, but we are very proud of this shed that we helped my dad build, and we truly made it feel like another room in the house. Well, from the outside anyway–the inside is unfinished and just your garden variety of utility shed. It’s got dirt, planters, shovels, and will eventually house a patio set if we ever buy one, ha ha.

So what you would never know from these images is that the majority of the wood used to build the actual shed, not the outside (siding & shingles) was actually re-purposed from my uncle’s deck.

I Know I’ve Been MIA, Here’s Why

So the last post I published was about our Christmas holidays–over 6 months ago, yikes! But don’t let that fool you into thinking I’ve left the blogging world. I have simply been busy with life & work, and haven’t quite found the balance that allows for me to keep posting about my personal life. That and I stopped inventing or recreating recipes, and opted out of the 365 project for 2018. BUT now that things have settled a little bit after moving into the new house, and while I am much busier with my businesses, I have more of a streamlined process and have a little more time to start writing again.

First things first, I have transitioned from eating keto to eating low-carb and healthy. What does that mean? I now enjoy sugar-free smoothies in the morning that include bananas or cherries, and a tasty glass of [pure] orange juice on the weekends. I still avoid pasta and potatoes, and other culprits like bread and any processed sugar or sugar-substitutes. So yes, some nut-free, sugar-free recipes might be in the works in the future. But for now, I am just focusing on eating healthy, and finding foods that don’t make me feel like crap. So far, so good.

Christmas 2017 – Favourite Holiday Traditions

Holiday traditions are always a fun thing to hear what other families do differently than yours, to hear about similarities, and to get great inspiration from completely out-of-the box ideas. This year was the first my partner and I spent together as husband and wife, and in our new home. When it comes to Christmas, I have got a boatload of traditions that I want to keep going, but this year felt like the perfect year to just do ‘us’, before the family and children come into play. And of course, we kept our little ornament tradition alive!

[more photos at the end of the page]

We spent a full 10 days on our honeymoon and I must say that it was a well-needed vacation, and a chance for us to reconnect after a stressful few months with the move to the new house. We did something new and exciting every single day, and took the time to relax when needed. Great company, good food, and a ton of fun. I’ve put together a list of all the cool things we did, where we ate, where we stayed, and gave recommendations and a review where I could. We loved San Francisco, and I highly suggest you add it to your travel list if it is not already there!

ONE YEAR LATER. So many emotions. My baby isn't a baby anymore. She's this tiny human with a big personality and I love her even more than I ever thought possible, in a way I never knew I could love. The fear and anxiety over her happiness and safety, the joy and immense pleasure of seeing her smile and hearing her laugh, the bliss and comfort of holding her snuggling body in my arms. Magical.⠀
⠀
This is a recreation of one of the photos I took during her first year to document what day to day life was like: the love and admiration, the fatigue and sleeplessness, the calm in the chaos. It depicted how I felt perfectly and it's still one of my favourites, so I decided to commemorate this moment by recreating a photo that rings true to how much has and has not changed in the past year. Literally; that’s the exact same onesie on little miss! > > S W I P E > > to see last year's portrait! ⠀

We were really hoping to be able to get this kid a play date for her birthday, but with the lock down and stay at home order it had become very clear this isn’t going to happen anytime soon. So we don’t get her hopes up (or mine!) and make sure that she totally loves our family fun dates, even if it means we are confined to the backyard. ☃️⠀
⠀
It’s especially helpful when we’ve got gear that keeps her warm the entire time from head to town AND a spare set in case she inevitably finds the wet melted ice. ❄️

Another day, another cold cup of mom fuel. ⠀
⠀
I love my kid, I truly do. What I DON'T love is being expected to stay strong through this entire ordeal all while being spread out thinner than dollar store panties. You see, I have a toddler to take care of (totally cool), and a business to run (yup, still cool, work while she sleeps), and a full-time job (virtual, but holy crap!), and no help with childcare since hubby is frontline worker with unpredictable hours most of the time. ⠀
⠀
As you probably assumed correctly, the little time I had for myself before is non-existent now, I rarely get to spend quality time with my husband, and our house looks like it's been taken over by gremlins after midnight. ⠀
⠀
I know it's normal, I know it's common, I know it's nothing to be ashamed of, I know—in theory. But it's really exhausting to need to stay strong all the time and remind myself that the chaos will end soon, because I have been telling myself this for almost a year. ⠀
⠀
What keeps YOU going these days? We could all use some inspiration (or at least some company in misery!).⠀

My portrait studio was forced to closed again with this most recent lockdown, so this weekend I took the opportunity to go through all of my props and backdrops and retire anything that hasn't been used since I moved in three years ago. It's a little sad to see things go, but they are going to new homes where people love colour and I get more space so it's a good thing.⠀

When given the chance, babies and toddlers almost
When given the chance, babies and toddlers almost always choose the unconventional item over an actual toy: a remote, a set of keys, reading glasses, thermometers, you name it, and let's not overlook the infamous cardboard box. ⠀
⠀
Why that is I will never truly know, but I think we adults need to take a page from their book and let our imagination and instincts guide us through life every once in a while. If they can imagine they are in a rocket ship gliding through space or that a dry paper box is literally washing their clothes and feel pure joy, why can't we adults even try? Logic is a learned skill, so let's relearn to let go of it when we need to and just embrace the joy that comes with blissful imagination. ⠀
⠀
Let's pull up a lounge chair, crank the space heater, put on a wave soundtrack, spray our hair with saltwater, put some sunglasses and our bathing suits on, and just lay there for 20 minutes and imagine ourselves to be on the beach we long to visit. Hate the beach? Pick a different scenario and act it out, imagine you are actually there and enjoy that [even if only temporary] JOY. ⠀

Many of you asked about the beans activity in my stories recently, so I figured I would take the opportunity to share since it really is so simple. ⠀
⠀
We use an old muffin tin that would otherwise have been trashed (spent one too many nights soaking in the sink—oops!), a small pack of mixed dried beans from the grocery store, and a set of small wooden spice scoops (you could totally just use regular spoons). ⠀
⠀
We set her up on the floor, encourage colour and size sorting, counting, and hand-eye-coordination by scooping from one receptacle to the next (they are stored in a small recycled juice container—which doubles as a second activity once they are put away >> SWIPE for the video).⠀
⠀
They have fun, they learn, and you get 10 minutes to yourself without being climbed upon like a human jungle gym. You still have to supervise because most kids will try to eat them, but if they sneak in a handful over the course of the hour (YES I GOT AN HOUR ONCE!), it's all good because it's taste-safe. Now go enjoy your half-freedom 🙌🏻 ⠀

As much as we have high hopes for 2021, we start i
As much as we have high hopes for 2021, we start it off the same way we finished 2020: in lockdown, trapped in the “safety” of our own home. Small businesses closed while big box stores thrive, parents going insane working from home feeling worked to the bone, children feeling isolated and confused, most of us clinging to hope for dear life waiting for all of this to be over.⠀
⠀
But have we really stopped to think about what that truly means? OVER. It has been projected that mask-wearing will last into the next two to three years, and honestly I don’t even care if it means that I will be able to see my friends and embrace my family and “go out”, whatever that means anymore. It is so much more than just wanting to go to a conventionally “fun” event or amusement park or whatever, it is about refusing to continuously be deprived of such basic things that I previously took for granted like a play date, a friendly chat over coffee, or an extended family dinner.⠀
⠀
More than anything I want my daughter to be able to run up to someone she will learn to call a friend without me having to literally hold her back out of fear in the same way I would from an oncoming vehicle. It pains my heart to see her disappointment, even if only for a second, I am even in tears writing about it. She is turning two this month and she literally has no friends, the only family she knows outside of her home is through a tiny screen, and there is nothing I can do about it. ⠀
⠀
I can live with masks, I can live with small gatherings only, I can even live with the fact that my business will never be the same as it was before, but what I cannot live with is this constant feeling of deprivation and longing. It comes to be too much most days. I like to think I will be fine, but the guilt and fear that keeps piling on makes it more and more difficult to keep convincing myself—but I continue.⠀
⠀
Keep your chin up, keep your hopes up, and embrace the break downs when they happen—it means you can take time to FEEL all the things and lift yourself up again to keep going, one day at a time.⠀

This year has been a very long and troublesome yea
This year has been a very long and troublesome year in so many ways, but there were also some amazing things that made 2020 great. I am sharing to not only remind myself of these great things, but also to give you the opportunity to do the same in your own life. ⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀
👉🏻 I pulled my daughter out of daycare just before she took her first steps so I was able to experience them first hand (and all of the other amazing firsts since!).
👉🏻 While my portrait studio was closed to in-person services, I was able to catapult my mom blog business into profitability (aka not costing me money this year) and keep it something I love doing.
👉🏻 During my downtime from work I was able to capture so many more at-home memories of my daughter and family and actually retouch them in a timely manner.
👉🏻 I was able to visit my grandparents (after negative tests, of course!) and my daughter got to experience where I grew up every summer.
👉🏻 My husband and I made it through a rough year after our baby, only to find ourselves going through a pandemic, and we made it, again, and will continue to do so.
👉🏻 My daughter makes me so soo happy; through all the tantrums I find joy in the way that she says mama, in the way she scrunchy-face smiles just like me, and bitter-sweet joy in how fast she is growing up because I got to experience it all ❤
 ⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀
And with that, I wish us all a positive and recovering year ahead. May 2021 bring the joy and we've been lacking (success would help too!). I’ll see you on the other side 😘⠀⠀

Life handed me an accidental “vacation” this p
Life handed me an accidental “vacation” this past week when we found ourselves without internet for EIGHT entire days—a work deferral as I call it. I know I’ve been living on the edge of burnout for a big part of this year and could use one, but this was the worst time it could have happened. I was knee-deep in print orders, onboarding a handful of clients, finally on a social media schedule I was happy with, and was in the middle of a project with a virtual team that required almost immediate responsiveness. To say shit hit the fan would be an understatement!
⠀⠀
Don’t feel too bad just yet, it mean that I barely touched my computer during the day (only checked my phone during business hours for the urgent emails), got to spend more one on one time with this sweet face, and the little time I did spend at my desk after kiddo went to bed was soooooo productive! I got three more sessions retouched than planned so I will likely be able to fulfill them before Christmas, got a ton of blog posts and social media captions drafted for the next couple of weeks, was able to get some education slipped in there (a true artist is always learning!), and thankfully pickups and sessions were unaffected! So while I may have a busy AF two weeks ahead of me to catch up on missed work that HAS TO be done ASAP, I’ve got a mini break to look forward to in the middle to spend Christmas with my little family, and I’ll be starting 2021 off with almost nothing on my business to do list (there’s always admin work to be done), and I am actually super excited! (pandemic aside) Almost makes me want to do this every month. Almost. I just hate the lack of control...
⠀
For those of you who run businesses, do you schedule unplugged ‘vacations’ to get work done without distractions? Or are you the type who can shut off the world and work for a couple hours every day?⠀
