My mother never called me ugly. Far from it! In fa
My mother never called me ugly. Far from it! In fact, she called me beautiful all the time. But growing up, I can distinctly remember her looking into the mirror or looking down at her post-baby belly and only having negativity to say about it. Whenever we asked why she wore cover-ups or tankinis when she was clearly overheating, it was always some version of 'because I am embarrassed'. As an adult, I recognize the small but incremental damage that has done and vow to never impose that self-doubt on my children. I don't fault her, but do I wish she knew then what I know now. I often wear long sleeves and pants in the summer because of my skin condition; not to cover it out of embarrassment, but rather to prevent it from getting worse (I am allergic to water topically, so when my skin touches itself it creates moisture and the wetness causes the rashes and suffering itchiness). BUT you betcha when it is super hot or when it comes down to dancing in the sprinkler with my kid, I do it! I live in the moment (and make sure I have a towel nearby for myself!). When we go swimming, I usually have a hairdryer on standby because I don't want to miss out on the fun and family time, and my husband is super respectful when I do set boundaries on how involved I want to be in a certain activity. All to say, even if you ARE embarrassed by something about your physical self, your children are NOT going to be the ones to point it out so don't point it out to them. Live in the moment and show them love and kindness, and create a generation that will go into the world with rose coloured glasses and brighten it with their positivity. Dream it enough and WE can make it a reality. ps: When is the last time you looked at yourself in the mirror and gave yourself a compliment instead of thinking something negative? I challenge you to always smile into the mirror, even if you don't love what you see. The kids are watching. I love this kid and her gorgeously scrunchie smile
I love this kid and her gorgeously scrunchie smiles. Supposedly she mirrors mine and that makes them even more special to me. Especially when it is accompanied by her adorable and room-filling laughter and we enjoy each other's company. Sometimes it is tough letting a toddler help with tasks because they take so much longer to accomplish, and I need to remind myself that this is how she learns to be a helpful and independent human being. So if taking ten minutes to get the corn ready before we even turn on the element means that we get to spend ten amazing minutes together preparing her favourite food, I take that as a big win. Toddlers are amazing humans. They are fascinated with such simple tasks that it really makes you have a different outlook on life. Take plants for example. See that spot on the mattress. That is a small but very stinky mess courtesy of my toddler, on the UNDER side of the mattress, an hour before we were scheduled to have visitors come see the house. GREEEEEAAAAAT! 💩 Thankfully the cover comes off and we were able to set it to wash while we were gone and just pop a crib sheet over top of the foam like no big deal, and a little jute baggie of baby potpourri hung on the fan further saved the day (thank you @mustela.canada!). 🙌🏻 Have any "close calls" lately?
