It's not officially Fall around here until we brea

It's not officially Fall around here until we break out the butternut squash soup. And all the baked goods like apple pie and cinnamon rolls, sucre à la crème, and apple cider. Gosh, I love sweets!

Whoever decided baking was just for sweet things was oh so mistaken! We love baking our butternut squash soup ingredients in the oven before making them into a soup. Yup, the squash, the sweet potato, the carrots, and even the apples. Toss them in olive oil and give them a nice roast!

My favourite part? While the soup is simmering, I like to give the apple bits an extra pan-fry in melted brown sugar (with butter if we aren't sharing with little miss) because it brings out the apple's unique flavours.

I want to take a moment to offer a round of apprec

I want to take a moment to offer a round of appreciation for my insta-husband, who begrudgingly agrees to take photos of me whenever I ask (and again because I didn't love the composition or my pose). I can tell he isn't always into it, but he does it anyway because it means something to me. Those little moments are ones where I feel the most heard, validated, and loved.

Most of all, our daughter sees the way he treats me and learns from it in a way that could never be taught by telling—it has to be shown. She even asked to take a photo of us and I happily obliged, fully expecting it to be blurry if we were even IN the frame. To my pleasant surprise, she accidentally captured this priceless video instead and I could not have asked for a better moment (SWIPE to watch!).

Thanksgiving is a very heavy holiday, and not just

Thanksgiving is a very heavy holiday, and not just because of the amount of delicious food we typically consume. It is a weekend that is normally filled with family and laughter, but this year once again it is filled with silence, the looming dread of slow season, and the overwhelming fear of what unknowns are to come.

So I am teaching my daughter to take the time and reflect on what is going on around us, embrace the calm between the storms, and that peace can come from enjoying one's own presence. When she is older, we will also educate her on what the history of Thanksgiving truly means here in Canada, and how our family chooses to celebrate what we have, all while acknowledging what it took to get here.

May the fall season also bring you joy 🍁

Some of you may recognize this dish since it has been a sentimental one over the years, with a twist. Nicoise salad is great because you can prepare the ingredients in advance and let them cool in the fridge, or eat it warm, so when you need a quick and healthy meal, this is it! We recently bought a kitchen set for little miss as an upgrade from her old one (aka a mixing bowl filled with miscellaneous kitchen things like veggie elastics and wine corks) and she is loving it! We could have waited for her birthday since it was a "big gift", but you see this is much more than just an upgraded toy.

This is a learning tool that teaches her to treat things with care, to safely mimic us as we cook family meals, to be independent in her own space, and to keep her out of the way when we are doing the more dangerous kitchen tasks like dealing with raw chicken or firing up the stove. Bonus that it also lets mama enjoy a HOT coffee in the morning!! Eventually we will upgrade it to a working faucet and a functional hot plate for even more learning opportunities far beyond the imagination of a toddler.

I don't know about you, but raising a toddler is hard work. Physically, sure, but mentally and emotionally draining as much as it is rewarding. So, whenever I get the chance (which hasn't been much during a pandemic), I take her out on mommy and me dates to remind us both that life isn't always about working and hustling and getting things done.

Sometimes life is truly about enjoying each other's company and doing fun things together. Like a coffee date at our favourite local cafe since it has dairy-free options for little miss, and nut-free options for me. Win, win, win. Yumm!

Do you remember the reel I posted a while back with the screaming toddler in the background while I was trying to make business phone calls? It's unfortunately been a common occurrence around here (my office does not have a door), so I have learned to actually kick these two OUT of the house while I need to work. Mostly because I need the silence, but also because little miss THRIVES while she is outdoors. And they don't need to go very far; the porch with the door closed is all I need!

The key is making sure they have some sort of activity to do so that they don't come in too soon. It can literally be as simple as telling kiddo to help pick up daddy's mess as he completes a task that I need him to do. Pear peels anyone?

Someone has been getting fussy at mealtimes. Not s

Someone has been getting fussy at mealtimes. Not so much on the food we give her (thank goodness!), but the fact that we make her sit in her highchair to do it.

A trick that almost never fails is to let her run around while I get her meal ready and place everything on the tray, because that always prompts her to go snack on it. 9/10 times she will let me put her in the chair just so she gets to eat it.

And the other time, well, she ends up eating standing up or on the floor. BUT ALWAYS IN THE KITCHEN because that is the boundary we set (or picnic on the porch if the weather allows). I am thinking it is time to get her a "big girl chair" to reward the "big girl behaviour".

Any recommendations? Or advice on the transition?

Feeding babies and feeding toddlers are two differ

Feeding babies and feeding toddlers are two different beasts, and our trolley contents have certainly changed over the course of the last year. With the new baby arriving soon, and little miss starting to use regular dishes, it was time to reorganize and take inventory, and the perfect opportunity for me to share my favourite must-have feeding gear for baby's first foods that actually last through to toddlerhood.

First up, the wheeled kitchen trolley. It has been instrumental in keeping everything organized AND within reach no matter where I end up feeding kiddo, and the divider containers helped tremendously. Spoiler Alert! We also have one for the nursery as our diaper station and two in my studio for session supplies & my order packing station.
